Freshman Titus Rice collides with a Titan defender in the key as sophomore Jordan Madrid-Andrews follows the play. Lane defeated Umpqua 71-49 in league play.

The Lane Community College men’s basketball team handed the Umpqua Community College men’s team their first home loss, 70-49. The Titans (9-7, 1-1) exacted a bit of revenge over a previous 83-67 defeat at the hands of the Riverhawks (10-6, 1-1) on Dec. 13. Lane held UCC to its lowest point total of the season after Umpqua entered the contest with a one game lead atop the Northwest Athletic Conference south region.

“We came out flat, very flat tonight,” head coach Daniel Leeworthy said. “We missed some easy high percentage shots early in the game.”

With 6:21 to play in the first half, Titan’s Malik Leaks 3-pointer gave Lane their first double digit lead of the game, 25-14. Over the next six minutes of play, the Titans gradually increased its lead on the back of an 18-3 run, providing Lane with a 43-20 lead at halftime.

“We shot horribly from the floor,” coach Leeworthy said. “Shooting 25 percent from the floor isn’t going to win us too many ball games.”

After managing just six first half field goals, on 20 percent shooting, UCC finished the game hitting 25.8 percent of its shots.

“Their (Lane) length and their zone defense really bothered us tonight,” Leeworthy said. “They were the aggressor; they played tougher than us, and they executed better than us. We have got to play better than that.”

UCC sophomore Jordan Madrid-Andrews had a team-high 11 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Joe Baldi contributed 10 points and a game-high four assists.

The Riverhawks’ next home game will be Feb. 7 at 4 p.m. against Portland, the defending NWAC champions.
